Update on Drone Attack Plot in Somalia

A recent intelligence report from Sablaale details a drone attack attempt on Friday night, January 31, at 7:30 PM, extending into Saturday.

Two explosive-laden drones, each carrying approximately 113 kilograms of payload, were launched from the area. These drones, powered by aviation fuel, have the capability to remain airborne for up to eight hours.

Background and Preparation

Reports suggest the drones were prepared and transported one to two months ago, during a period when Jihaad Mustafa and Eng. Osma'il were in Sablaale. Abu Ubaidah was also present at the time, staying in the area for two days.

Intended Targets & Attack Failure

The drones were launched from Sablaade and attempted to attack the presidential palace “Villa Somalia”. The president’s guards were firing at the drones throughout the night.

Despite the delay in obtaining intelligence, sources confirm that the attack failed. Interestingly, the operatives were unaware of the failure until after it had occurred.

Next Planned Attack: February 2

Following the unsuccessful attempt, Eng. Osma'il and Jihaad Mustafa are reportedly en route to Sablaale to personally oversee the next operation. Another aerial attack is scheduled for Sunday night, February 2, continuing into Monday morning.

This confrontation underscored the porous nature of the approximately 600-kilometer border, the dangers inherent in relying on unregulated auxiliary forces, and the glaring absence of an effective bilateral crisis-management mechanism.
