LRA Threats Spark Exodus in Mbangana Over "Kony’s Daughter"

Based on information received by Africa Security Analysis, the vast Haute-Kotto prefecture in the Central African Republic—home to the diamond-mining village of Mbangana—is facing renewed security threats from the remnants of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Although the LRA’s overall military strength has diminished significantly over the years, the group remains capable of launching deadly raids, carrying out abductions, and perpetrating lootings that destabilize vulnerable communities.

A critical new development has further imperilled Mbangana. In recent days, a young girl, introduced by locals as the daughter of Joseph Kony, emerged from the bush in the Hadjartène area via a mountain passage that leads to Sudan. The local population initially welcomed her, and she was subsequently transferred to Bria before being taken to Bangui, the national capital. However, just a few days later, LRA rebels loyal to Kony began issuing stark threats to the village of Mbangana. The rebels now demand the return of the young girl, warning that they will attack the village if she is not returned.

This demand has incited widespread fear throughout the local area. As a result, residents of Mbangana—as well as those in Yangoupendéré and neighbouring localities—have gradually begun to abandon their homes. Many have fled toward Yalinga and Sam-Ouandja, leading to a progressively paralyzed village environment in Mbangana.

The renewed activity of the LRA, coupled with their demand for the return of the young girl, exemplifies how even a diminished rebel force can exploit local dynamics to threaten regional stability. The porous borders of Haute-Kotto, especially near Sudan, continue to offer the LRA transit routes and safe havens, complicating efforts by UN peacekeepers and other international actors to secure the area.

This updated analysis by Africa Security Analysis underscores that while the LRA no longer holds the overwhelming power it once did, its sporadic yet targeted actions continue to pose a serious threat—particularly to communities like Mbangana. The situation remains highly fluid, necessitating sustained monitoring and robust local measures to mitigate further destabilization in Haute-Kotto.
