Kidnapping of two foreigners in Niger
Niger announced today that two Chinese engineers working at an oil field in eastern Niger have been kidnapped from a Chinese company responsible for transporting oil from Niger to Benin for export.
The abduction led to the deaths of members of the Niger Guard (GNN force). While no group has claimed responsibility, the Islamic State (ISIS) had previously warned foreign workers in the oil field. The region has faced multiple attacks in early and late 2024 by armed groups demanding the release of former Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted in a military coup.
The area falls within territory where both ISIS’s West Africa Province and al-Qaeda operate.
